About the Event

Orillia Centre for Arts + Culture is working in partnership with adelheid (Toronto) to expand their emerging artists platform! re:research + design is a residency focused on providing a choreographer or collective of movement artists with time, space, and facilitation in the area of design. Artists are provided resources to deeply investigate the creation process with specific mentorship focused on incorporating design (sound, costume, lighting, projection, or set) into their developing work. The call was open to artists who identify as Indigenous, Black or Persons of Colour. The 2021 Artists-in-Residency hail from Ottawa and belong to the collective Speakeasy. The group is exploring the art of sampling as seen in Hip-Hop music. They are “refurbishing sounds, visual clips, and urban dances to celebrate the roots of a language”.  Artists Céline Richard Robichon, Vanessa Lovell, and Armel Mzalina will work with award winning music composer, sound designer, video designer, media artist and theatre advisor David Mesiha.  Orillia’s own theatre technician Max Kane at the Orillia Opera House will work with the group through four days of performance development from October 10th to 14th.
